Kalangba Secondary School, 2016

Like so many rural communities in Sierra Leone, the village of Kalangba in Gbendembu-Ngowahun Chiefdom in Sierra Leone has struggled to educate its children.  Although Kalangba has primary (elementary) schools and a junior secondary(middle) school it has no senior secondary (high) school, which means that students either finish their educations in towns far away from home, or they quit school altogether.

Kalangba solved the problem by creating a third option: create a senior secondary school of their own that would allow children to finish their secondary education without leaving home.  Community leaders have gotten permission from the Ministry of Education for the new school and they mobilized the community to begin work on classroom building.

Kalangba needs some additional funding from SLVP to complete their project within the next few months in time to open in the Fall.  With the additional funding 129 of the current junior secondary school students will enroll in the new senior secondary school.  It is estimated that in the next few years hundreds of Kalangba's children will be able to complete secondary school education without leaving home.
