How You Can Help

Thank you for your interest in helping us!  There are many different ways you can contribute.  A cash donation helps us the most and we always send receipts so that when tax-time comes you can be sure to get the write off.  However, we know that this is a trying economic climate.  Below is a list of ways you can help us out, several of which are at no cost to you...

Donate…

To make a donation click here.

Use a charitable search engine…

Goodsearch.com is your basic search engine, just like Google (it’s powered by Yahoo!) but so much better.  They make a 1 cent donation every time a user selects our charity and then makes a search.  It’s as wonderful and easy as it sounds, click here to learn more.

Shop on Amazon…

Just click here and register your Amazon account with the AmazonSmile Program.  Then every time you purchase an eligible product (most are, you can find out on the item's product page when you see the notation, "eligible for the AmazonSmile).  Amazon donates 0.5% of each purchase to SLVP!

Shop online…

The same great team that brought us Goodsearch.com has a tool called Goodshop.com.  Every time you do some online shopping at the more than 1,000 major participating retailers (Amazon, Best Buy and Gap, to name a few) a percentage of your purchase is donated to us by the retailer.  This is at no cost to you, and it gets better, GoodShop provides many coupons and deals for use online.  To learn how click here.

Get married…

Or at least think of us when you create your registry.  The Wedding Channel.com and the Ido Foundation have teamed up to allow generous brides to register for charitable donations.  We are an approved charity (we’re too small to be on the select list, so you will have to nominate us, but don’t worry we’ve passed their test).  To see a step by step tutorial click here and congratulations!

Attend one of our Fundraisers…

We have several fundraisers a year.  They usually center around silent auctions for fabulous items well below retail value.  Over the years, we've auctioned off high-end bottles of wine, ski cabins, countless gift cards and packages, but the real treat is that whenever one of us comes back from Sierra Leone we try to bring as much of their artistry as we can for auction too.  Pictured to the right are some traditionally dyed pieces of fabric, known as gara (close up it almost looks like wood or tortoise shell) and handmade strands of beads dating back to the 40s or 50s made of pulverized glass.  To find out about upcoming events in your area and get an invite send us an email.

Learn more about Sierra Leone and make a contribution…

Purchase the book, Black Man’s Grave, and 50% of the proceeds go to fund SLVP projects.  Double dip by purchasing it via GoodShop at Amazon.com!  To learn more about the book, click here.

Spread the word…

Tell your friends and family about us and our site.  And if you know any teachers who would be interested in having us in the classroom, we’re spread out all over the U.S.  We’d be happy to come in and share with the kids.  Send us an email and we’ll be in touch.

Donate those hidden talents...

Because we all work for free and can’t afford to pay anyone else, we could really use a hand from some people with hidden and not-so-hidden talents.  If you are or you know anyone who is a CPA, font designer, graphic designer or if you just have some time and want to help out, we can definitely use the help.  Send us an email and we will put you to work!

Donate used items…

Airline luggage limits and hefty shipping fees usually prohibit us from bringing too much over to Sierra Leone, but when we do visit we try to bring as much as we can.  If you have items you would like to donate, send us an email and we will try our best.  Ideal items include backpacks for kids, light school supplies and solar powered items.

Work for a large corporation…

Many corporations have really generous charitable programs.  Some provide matching funds when their employees make a donation.  If you’d like to make a donation, check with your employer to see if they will match it and we will do the paperwork.  If you need any information contact us.

A lot of corporations also produce things that we could use as gifts.  These really vary, so don’t be afraid to ask.

-Much of our fundraising comes from auctions, donations of items like gift cards, retail goods will be welcomed.

-Food and beverages to serve at auctions and fundraisers will also help us keep our overhead low.

-As our travel to Sierra Leone comes from our own pockets, we could make use of airline miles and camping/outdoor gear.

-When we go to Sierra Leone we try to bring as much as we can for the students.  Items that a company wouldn’t sell because they are deemed defective, say T-shirts that are the wrong color or misprinted would be a welcome piece of clothing to take along.

We’d be happy to give the sponsoring company publicity through press releases, plugs on our site and tax write offs where applicable.  For information, please contact us.
